Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2015

Yesterday was third Memory Walk that I’ve helped to organise, and it surpassed all expectations.  The sun shone, the sea sparkled, and everybody was happy to be there.  I heard so many stories of Alzheimer sufferers, their carers, family and friends, that I was on the verge of tears all day, not through sadness but in admiration for the courage, compassion and hope which is constantly demonstrated by those affected, and because so many people turned out to ensure we had a record breaking year!

We had amazing support from the local press, and all the voluteers worked so hard to ensure that everything went smoothly.  For the first time this year, walkers could register online, so we were expecting double last year’s numbers, but were thrilled that half as many people again turned up and registered on the day.

Between the magnificent cake stall, raffle, silly guessing games, donations, and merchandise stall we raised an unbelievable £747.49 and now we’re waiting to see what the online sponsorship total is.  Justgiving accounts remain open for a year after the event, so you can still sponsor or donate if you know someone who took part.

Planning is already starting for Memory Walk 2016, which is going to be bigger and better than ever.

The facebook page is here:

Like and share, and let’s get the word out to as many people as possible.  As soon as online  registration opens for next year we’ll let you know.  And if you’d like to volunteer to be a marshall, or man a stall, or bake a cake, or donate a raffle prize, get in touch!

There’ve been ups and downs along the way, and at times I found it hard to stay motivated, but in the end the enthusiasm of the participants, the weather, the fun, and the endless smiling faces made it all worth the work, and next year’s walk is going to tremendous!

Lowestoft Memory Walk

I’m getting excited about this year’s Memory Walk now.  Today I had a meeting with Suzan Collins to sort out a few details. I’ve just gone onto the Alzheimer’s Society website to have a look at our event, and I’m thrilled to see it there. Not so thrilled that they have somehow got the address details completely wrong.  I’ll post a correction on our Facebook page, and let the website people know – hope they can amend it.

Please consider joining the walk this year and helping to raise money for such a great cause.

Book.

I’ve just finished writing my chapter of the chain book which is going to be sold to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research.  I’m also involved with fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society, but more about that another time.

I’ve passed the book back for a bit of admin before it goes off to the next author.  It’s nearly finished, and we’ll have it for sale very soon.

I love collaborative writing, being a part of something.  If this does well, I hope there’ll be more.  It’s been great fun, reading the other contributions, and continuing the story.  I really got into it, and could have gone on for pages and pages, but I’m saving all those other ideas for another day.

The book’s untitled as yet, so I can’t tell you what to look out for, but don’t worry, I won’t be able to shut up about it once it’s done!

Just Write It!

Today the Just Write It! group is meeting in Beccles Library to discuss social networking and how it can be used to promote our work.  We’re all ages and technological abilities and the wireless connection isn’t fabulous, so it’s been great fun.  There will be some pretty dull posts coming out of this as I get used to using it, so feel free to pass on by.  When there’s something interesting to read, I’ll let you know.

Struggling, tbh

Don’t bother reading this, I’m just trying to figure out WordPress and how it all works.  It’s just not doing what I want it to do.  It’s obviously something I’ve done/not done, but blowed if I can figure it out.  There might be more later, it might even be worth reading.

It’s definitely reading week.

I feel the need, the need to read…

This is one of the books I’m getting excited about this week.  It’s been out a while, but it’s just reached the top of my reading pile…I loved The Radleys, The Dead Fathers’ Club and The Last Family in England – all glorious slices of slightly dysfunctional humanity drawn with warmth, wit and pinpoint accuracy.  It doesn’t matter which one, but buy one NOW! (From a bookshop, please.)  If you like Matt Haig, and have read everything he’s ever written, don’t worry.  Although there’s no one else quite like him, there are other books that examine life as we (don’t quite) know it from a beautifully skewed perspective that highlights the pain, joy and ridiculousness of being (very nearly) human.  Try Paul Magrs’ Brenda series – astute, poignant, intelligent and great fun.  Start with Never the Bride.

Out tomorrow, and I can’t wait:  number nine in the Roy Grace series.

The rest of the pile this week:  Stephen King Joyland, David Mitchell Back Story, Danny Baker Going to Sea in a Sieve.  All worth a look, all in paperback, all available from your local bookshop.
